On the Farm

Back in July, we traveled up the road to Snow Hill, NC for Donna’s cousin’s birthday. Donna’s late great-grandmother Annabelle farmed in Snow Hill and her great-uncle Otis continues to run the farm. It is such a change of scenery from what we are use to here and I really enjoyed capturing some images of the farm, as well as some family members. And since the cousins also have a swimming pool, our Nola couldn’t resist jumping in!

Nola’s 2nd Birthday Party

Our Nola celebrated her second birthday in late July. We held the party at a place we are really familiar with as a family…Wrightsville Beach Park. It was the prefect location of an outdoor party in July. That ocean breeze was a godsend! Donna and I loved celebrating this milestone with our friends and family. Also, a shout out to Evan Vetter for shooting the pics of Nola and me (Evan is a filmmaker. You can see his work at congocast.org). It was pretty cool to be on the other side of the camera with my baby girl.

Halley’s 7th Grade Send Off

A few weeks ago, we had a backyard marshmallow roast for my sister-in-law, Halley, to celebrate her first day of 7th grade. Yep. You read that right…my sister-in-law is twelve. Donna and I were dating when Halley was born and it has been so cool to see her grow into the young lady she is today.

Family Vacation to Highlands, NC

Just a couple weeks ago, we decided to take a last minute family vacation to the mountains. Real last minute…as in we decided to go on vacation on a Monday, we booked our house rental on a Wednesday, and on that Friday we were on the road. We chose to go to Highlands, NC because it has so many waterfall hikes. We had been to Highlands before, spending one night at the Main Street Inn, and Donna and I really enjoyed the quaint downtown. Plus, we liked the fact that there are so many hikes within 30 minutes of Highlands. As for the house rental itself, we were really pleased. We were unsure if we were going to be able to find a place in time, and were nervous when the first homeowner we heard back from wouldn’t rent to us because we had a toddler. (Good thing for her, since we were planning on letting our potty-training toddler roam around her house butt-nekkid, a permanent marker in one hand, and a sippy cup of grape juice in the other.) But it worked out perfectly, because this two bedroom house (which we found on VRBO.com) was so cozy and had a wonderful screened porch where we spent a lot of time relaxing while Nola napped.

On the first day, we decided to take it easy and planned just two outings. In the morning, we put Nola in the Kelty and hiked up Whiteside Mountain and then the Devil’s Courthouse. Whiteside Mountain is a moderate two-mile hike that goes around the back of the mountain and then along the ridge. Devil’s Courthouse spurs off the Whiteside trail and is a much more rugged hike. That evening after dinner, we visited Dry Falls. This is a big, beautiful fall that is just a quick walk from the parking lot.

On Sunday, we hiked to Whitewater Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in the east with a total drop of just over 400 feet. Nola has a favorite book, Goodnight North Carolina, that highlights attractions and facts about the state. And since Whitewater Falls is featured, we brought the book along to show Nola what the waterfall looked like in real life. We then went to Silver Run Falls, which is one of our favorites hikes because it is so lush with an awesome swimming hole.

On the way back to Highlands from Whitewater and Silver Run Falls, we took Whiteside Cove Road to see Grimshaw’s Post Office and the “Giant Poplar Tree”…70 inches in diameter and 147 feet tall.

This is the Inn at Half-Mile Farm. We came across this because it is located across the street from our rental. When we visited, a crew was cleaning up from a wedding the day before. Very cool venue!

Sunday night after dinner, we decided to hike Glen Falls. Donna and I did this hike a few years back, and wanted to do it again since we were in the area. Glen Falls is a strenuous 1.2-mile hike that descends 700ft in 1 mile. Whew. Add an extra 25lbs on your back for an nice workout.

On Sunday, coming back from seeing the giant poplar, we noticed this hiking spot to Sunset Rock, and decided to try it on Monday. This is a pretty half-mile hike to the top with views overlooking Highlands.

After Sunset Rock, we stopped in at the Highland Hiker to see if they had any suggestions for our last hike of the trip. They were extremely helpful and encouraged us to see the Bull Pen Cascades along the Chattooga River. The Chattooga River became well known in the late seventies because of the movie Deliverance. We were uncertain of the long, gravel road that seemed a little too rustic, a little too removed from civilization…I kept hearing this little voice saying “squeal like a pig, boy.” Amazing how movies can be the complete opposite of reality. Anyway, we were not disappointed when we reached the Iron Bridge. We hiked to the bottom and played in the water for a while. We were the only ones around and it was amazing.

For our last night, we decided to spend it in downtown Highlands. It is a sleepy town with most of the stores closing at 5pm. So we just strolled and window-shopped. We stopped at the visitor’s center and took some photos on the lawn.

And what is a vacation without great eats? Highlands has several higher-end restaurants that weren’t really an option for us since we had a toddler in tow. But nevertheless we ate well. We enjoyed the Ugly Dog Pub, Highlands Smokehouse, Flipside Burgers, and Buck’s Cofee. And we couldn’t resist a little taste from home with Kilwin’s Ice Cream.

Family Snow Day
