Cashiers NC Family Vacation, Part 4

On the way home, we stopped in Flat Rock to visit Sky Top Orchard. The name is fitting, to be certain, as we drove straight up the mountain (with our check engine light still on). While most of the apples had already fallen, we were still able to have a great time roaming the orchard and looking at the farm animals. Before we left, we bought lots of Pink Lady apples, freshly baked apple cinnamon doughnuts, and apple pie fudge. What a great way to end our vacation!

Cashiers NC Family Vacation, Part 3

On the last day of vacation, we decided that Nola should try a hike it on her own two feet. Silver Run Falls is a favorite of ours and was perfect for this because it was so close to the cabin and is a short hike. The rest of the day was spent in downtown Cashiers taking in all of the unique consignment shops and gift stores. Nola also had a chance to explore Village Play…a massive playground in the town square. Also below is a shot of Cornucopia which is our favorite place to eat.

Cashiers NC Family Vacation, Part 2

When we went to Highlands in the spring, we passed the Cashiers Farmers Market and both loved how it looked. This time we were able to stop, go in, and enjoy their BBQ and cornbread. Nola loved the carved bears and the owner’s dog that slept on the front porch. Down below, you also see pictures of our second day hiking. We went to Gorges State Park and decided to hike to Rainbow Falls. The first part of the hike was surprisingly easy until, well, it wasn’t. I didn’t think we would ever back to our car. Anyhow, Nola saw several people hiking with sticks, so once she was out of the Kelty, she found herself a hiking stick and I believe would have hiked down the mountain by herself if we would have let her. The following day, we drove up a beautiful mountain to hike Panthertown Valley. This was the most remote hiking spot we visited while on this trip…the parking lot was the shoulder of the gravel road. On the way to this hike, we came across a Christmas Tree farm and some of the trees were already tagged and ready to go.

Cashiers NC Family Vacation, Part 1

A few weeks ago we took a family vacation to Cashiers, NC. If you know us, you know that we love the mountains, that we love hiking, and that we love staying in smaller, out-of-the-way towns. We took off on the only free days I had left in October and just barely missed the peak with the Fall leaves. But since we are from Wilmington, we didn’t mind much! We decided to stay in Cashiers, because, like Highlands (where we went in May), there are a lot of waterfall hikes within short driving distances. We broke up the trip a little bit by staying the first night in Brevard, NC so we could enjoy Dupont State Forest. This park is still under construction somewhat, but is already impressive. We hiked, but there were also people mountain biking and horseback riding on the trails. When we arrived in Cashiers, we had a bumpy start. Our house rental lost heat the first night, and then the whole mountain lost power the next day. Then a few hours later, our check engine light come on in the car. But…we didn’t let those things keep us down! The house rental (found on VRBO.com) was comfy with a wrap-around porch and satellite TV. The latter was a real treat for Nola…she promptly fell in-love with Olivia and The Backyardigans.

Play for Emily – Ronald McDonald House

I was recently contacted to offer my services for the Play for Emily charity golf tournament at Landfall Country Club. The golf tournament raises money for the Ronald McDonald Houses of Chapel Hill, Durham, and eastern NC (Greenville). The Ronald McDonald House is a special place for my family. When I was younger, my family stayed at a Ronald McDonald House while my brother was in the hospital, so we experienced firsthand the positive impact of this organization. Their mission is to provide families, who seek medical attention away from home, a refuge that offers basic comforts. While staying at the Ronald McDonald house, the family is able to care for a sick child without having to worry about where to eat or having to go through the hassle of booking a hotel for extended durations. And perhaps most importantly, it is a place where families can connect with other families who are going through the same thing.

For photographers: My approach to this was more like a commercial shoot. While my portrait and wedding clients tend to prefer me to freely document their day, I knew that the Director of Marketing (i.e. Creative Director) had some specific shots/needs for her organization. I wanted to make sure I met those needs first and then move on to documenting the day with my personal vision. I also needed to be aware of any logistics such as start times, any club or game play restrictions, and what type of deliverables were required (i.e. digital uploads, disc of images, hi-res, lo-res). It’s much more business-like than portrait work and I find it to be very enjoyable. Communication is key. Some Creative Directors offer up more information than others. If you do not feel like you are 100% certain of what is needed for their marketing needs, make sure you find out.

On the Farm

Back in July, we traveled up the road to Snow Hill, NC for Donna’s cousin’s birthday. Donna’s late great-grandmother Annabelle farmed in Snow Hill and her great-uncle Otis continues to run the farm. It is such a change of scenery from what we are use to here and I really enjoyed capturing some images of the farm, as well as some family members. And since the cousins also have a swimming pool, our Nola couldn’t resist jumping in!

Nola’s 2nd Birthday Party

Our Nola celebrated her second birthday in late July. We held the party at a place we are really familiar with as a family…Wrightsville Beach Park. It was the prefect location of an outdoor party in July. That ocean breeze was a godsend! Donna and I loved celebrating this milestone with our friends and family. Also, a shout out to Evan Vetter for shooting the pics of Nola and me (Evan is a filmmaker. You can see his work at congocast.org). It was pretty cool to be on the other side of the camera with my baby girl.

Halley’s 7th Grade Send Off

A few weeks ago, we had a backyard marshmallow roast for my sister-in-law, Halley, to celebrate her first day of 7th grade. Yep. You read that right…my sister-in-law is twelve. Donna and I were dating when Halley was born and it has been so cool to see her grow into the young lady she is today.
